Aspect ratio: 1.66:1

Theatrical soundtrack: Dolby Stereo

Originally edited for US consumption and released under the title CREEPERS, the full-length version of Dario Argento’s masterwork reveals the method in his madness. Whereas the edited version was a fast-moving collage of half-baked themes which evoked nothing of any significance, PHENOMENA reinstates the crazy-quilt pacing, whereby dream-like passages surrender abruptly to episodes of screaming hysteria, all of which is essential to any appreciation of the film’s dark ambitions.

Romano Albani’s sumptuous cinematography transforms the breathtaking Swiss locations into a fairy-tale landscape where monstrous eruptions of violence disturb the illusion of tranquility, and Jennifer Connelly drifts through the narrative in a state of near-hypnotic grace, allowing herself to become ensnared by the machinations of a deformed killer and his/her equally psychotic ‘guardian’. True, the longer version is bogged down at times by lengthy dialogue scenes which hold up the plot, and the involvement of Donald Pleasence’s chimp is no less misguided than before (its final act of retribution crosses the line into absurdity), but the set-pieces are magnificently realised, and the final 20 minutes are as hair-raising as anything in Argento’s ouevre.

Dario Argento throws in all his trademarks in this horror/fantasy extravaganza.A plain crime story mixed with dream sequences, gore, state of the art camerawork, maggots, fireflies, broken glass, running water, beautiful young girls and a brilliant soundtrack. You name it, it`s all here !

Argento has made a lot of mediocre movies the recent years, but this 1984 movie is a true classic.

The film is presented in 1.66:1 with a DD 5.1 soundtrack. Both picture and sound is good, but nothing spesial.Anchor bay has also thrown in some extras, but nothing very interesting in my opinion. There is a dull commentary with Argento and three of his collaborators in very broken english, a trailer, two music videos,a lousy behind the scenes segment, and a ridiculous Argento interview from a Joe Franklin show. And don`t be fooled to believe that the 28 minutes that is restored in this UNCUT and UNCENSORED version is gore.It is simply the full european version, and all 28 minutes are plain story and character building. No doubt that this cut is much better than the “Creepers” cut, though.

It is the feature itself that makes this disc a must-have.They simply don`t make movies like this anymore ! (Neither does Argento, unfortunately !)

Now I can hardly wait for Anchor Bay to release “Opera” and ” Suspiria.”

I am not doing this review based on the Disney release, but on the original Japanese release. This charming little story is a product of Hayao Miyazaki’s Studio Ghibli, but it is directed by Miyazaki’s associate, Hiroyuki Morita. It is actually a sequel to the excellent and equally charming Whisper of the Heart, another beautiful though very low-key Ghibli product. The strange thing is that Whisper of the Heart has never been released in the U.S.; releasing the sequel before the original is a bit odd.

That being said, a wealth of details about the films (and everything from Studio Ghibli) can be found on the tremendously informative nausicaa.net Web site. Since this film is being released with Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind and Porco Rosso on February 22, it can only be hoped that it will ride somewhat on the coattails of the two better-known Miyazaki works and will have decent sales. It’s an excellent family film and is a refreshing change (like all of Ghibli’s works) from giant robots, ninjas, vampires, brainless lowbrow comedy mixed with mindless violence, and the other junk that pervades way too much of contemporary anime releases.

Let me start off this review by saying the movie itself is a five star treat. I rented, after being on a Miyazaki and Ghibli streak, wanting to see all this Japanese studio had to offer. This one blew me away. It made me renew my love for cats, and I know this is one that my best friend, a feline fanatic himself, will probably be proudly displaying next to his What’s Michael? japanese comics. Something the collective asian conscience gives them an affinity for cats, and it helps this movie shine. Anyone who has kids or cat lovers will enjoy this tale, but some may be a little lost. There was a movie before this one called Whisper of The Heart, not translated into english, but it isn’t the same storyline, just the same characters, so you wont be missing any info, just dealing with a huge plot. Its worth investing in though.

WARNING!: Long Plot Ahead! (You should probably just skip to the end and then watch the movie, but it’s here for the confused)

School girl Haru has problems. She can’t seem to get up on time, make it school, or keep it together in class. She has a crush on the coolest kid in class, but he just got a girlfriend. Her self esteem is way down. On her way home from school, her and her friend observe a cat with a gold chain carrying a package. They watch it look both ways, and cross the street. It’s carrying a small package in its mouth, and trips in the street, dropping the little package. They gasp, and Haru rushes into the street. As a truck is about to squish the little cat, she scoops him up with her lacrosse stick (carried home from school) and sweeps him into a bush. Upon landing in the bush alongside, she breaks her stick. The cat gets up, and then stands on it’s hindlegs. After brushing himself off, he bows and says ‘Thank you for saving my life. I will repay you.’ and skitters off. Haru thinks she’s crazy. When she tells her mom she replies that she has said the same thing before, that she could talk to cats when she was little. She shrugs it off, and heads to bed. In the night, however, the King of Cats and a procession of cats (including the most hilarious black cats, who have a suit-and-tie pattern in their fur, and are the kings secret service) and walk up to her door. She has snuck down to see the commotion, and the steward for the king speaks. He tells her that the cat she saved was Prince of the Cat Kingdom, and they would repay her starting the next day, handing her a list of the gifts. She sleeps and wakes, thinking it’s a dream. But, the scroll remains, and the things start happening from the scroll (a hilarious scene where her friend is at school, knee deep in lacrosse sticks had me laughing for about five minutes). Soon, she is overwhelmed by it all, and the last gift is revealed. She must marry the prince, and go to the cat kingdom to live in their palace! Distraught, she is told by a mysterious voice to find a big white cat, and he will lead her to the Cat Bureau. Once found, big cat Muta leads her to a tiny town, with a tiny cat. This is the cat pictured on the box. He introduces himself as Baron von Gikkingen, but The Baron works fine.(because his creator gave him a ridiculous name). A crow statue named Toto comes to life and Haru finds out that Baron and Toto were both given souls because their creators loved them so much, and started the Buearu with refugee Muta. With that, The Baron agrees to help Haru and visit the Cat Kingdom to talk sense into them. Just in time, because the cat vanguard arrives to take her away. The Bureau pursues, and Muta and Haru are whisked away, with The Baron and Toto in hot pursuit.

Whew.

Anyway, this movie is by director Hiroyuki Morita, his first head directing credit. Most other Ghibli movies had been done by Miyazaki or Takahata, with the major exceotion of ‘Whisper of the Heart’, a detailed picture about a young writer who meets the Baron and he inspires her. Miyazaki wrote it and boarded it, then passed it to Yoshifumi Kondo, who died tragically after the release. So, Miyazaki passed this project (the ’sequel’) to Morita. Many on the review boards don’t like his style. I think it’s grand, a soft and more modern approach for the story of a soft and modern girl thrown into a fantasy world. It’s still beautiful and has great art direction throughout. The cats are well done, making me marvel at how they captured so many nuances. In just an hour and almost a half, Morita tells his five hundred page storyboard, with 900 lines of dialouge. And it never gets boring, kids wont be dulled by the dialouge and they’ll learn a lesson (it’s not just about believing in yourself, it’s about loving who you are)

The quality of the video is great, not the best of the disney transfers, but its soft lensed look adds instead of subtracts from the story, and the audio is amazing. The score is special, as it contains a complete orchestra, something that Ghibli hadn’t done before. The theme song is also unique, as its theme was done by an artist Ayano Tsuji, with just her amazing vocals and a Ukelaili. All of the info on the audio and art can be seen on the Making of featurette.

Speaking of:

There is a Behind The Microphone featurette, covering the voice cast of the american dubbing. This features stars such as Cary Elwes as the Baron (from Princess Bride), Anne Hathaway as Haru (from the Princess Diaries), Peter Boyle as Muta (the dad from everybody loves raymond), Tim Curry as the King of Cats (from lots of movies) and Andy Richter as Natoru, secretary to the king (from… no one remembers his show). Next is an in depth Making Of featurette, that covers the original, the process of making the movie, scoring it and promoting it. Last, the second disc, which features a Complete Storyboard. It’s just the audio from the movie set to these storyboards. It’s a treat for art students and superfans, casual observers and families will pass this disc by.

Overall, a fantastic movie, with a great and deep plot, proving that Ghibli has a bright future even after Takahata and Miyazaki aren’t directing their features. Compassionate, creative and cool, Cat lovers and families need this movie!

Insightful and humorous, “This Is Macbeth” weaves together dramatic scenes, “off-stage” interviews, and cogent analyses to help students experience Shakespeare in a relevant, highly enjoyable way.

Between exciting stagings of the most memorable scenes, characters step behind the curtain to discuss their motivations, while medieval historian/talk-show host Ralph Holinshed provides historical background and explores the play’s themes.

Hilarious 11th-century advertisements and news ticker commentary blend past and present to paint a picture of Macbeth’s and Shakespeare’s times, offering context for students while simultaneously demonstrating the many ways in which the play and its themes are still pertinent today.

In short, “This Is Macbeth” both educates and entertains. If you are a student who loves Macbeth and wants to deepen your understanding, a student who can’t relate to Macbeth but must read it anyway, or a teacher with students of either type, I’d highly recommend this movie!

For the uninitiated, Shakespeare’s plays can be pretty impenetrable. This movie solves that problem with an entertaining exploration of the Scottish Play. A mix of CNN-style interviews with the characters, scenes from the play, and goofy commercials, this movie is a must for all english teachers who wish to breathe new life into the material.

This review is directed primarily to the under 30’s who are still trying to figure out the boomer generation. As one savvy reviewer here surmised, this film goes a long way into explaining the psychological behavior of boomers who actually were instructed by well-meaning nuns (in my case)or other elementary and high school teachers to practice ducking beneath their desks in the event of a nuclear strike. As the wit, Dave Barry, points out, the stucture of wood and minimal steel was no doubt designed as a carefully-constructed safeguard against nuclear annihilation by the brain trust that was guiding the civil defense system of the era. Other such gross anomalies are addressed in this film.

In this case, the idea of looking back provides some comic relief, but I for one, can tell you, that when the sirens were going off every other day back in 1962-63, we didn’t regard it as all that funny. Read the Amazon reviewer’s take above, then invest some money in purchasing this film. It is a great document that depicts a serious subject in a lighthearted manner, yet the underlying message is timeless. It should come shipped with the caveat: “Lest we forget.”

Before Peter Kuran and his special effects magic on old atomic films, there was “The Atomic Café.” It’s a psuedo-documentary (it’s all pieces of old Civil Defense, nuclear testing, and government films cobbled together, with some newsreel footage to boot) by Jayne Loader and Kevin Rafferty (George W. Bush’s cousin, who later added his talents to a little production called “Roger and Me.”) The humor is dark (and funny) only in retrospect, as “The Atomic Café” explores some of the most insidious and stupid moments of the cold war.

It starts with the Manhattan Project and the effects of the Bomb on Japan, and segues right into the Rosenberg’s trial and the insanity of McCarthyism. Next, you have the famous “duck and cover” films along with lesser-known civil defense stuff, including fallout shelter plans and so forth. There is little narration, and what you hear, comes from the Rosenberg’s testimony, army technicians explaining how radiation can be avoided (yeah, right) and the viewer’s own common sense, saying, “man, we really believed this hogwash once, and it helped us sleep better at night.”

This new DVD presentation gives us the film in its original 1.33:1 aspect ratio, with a two-channel stereo soundtrack. The print is decent, but as none of these old films were restored before compilation, there is grain and color loss throughout, but it’s a problem with the source material, not the DVD itself (this is how Atomic Café was supposed to look). The sound is the biggest disappointment: Kuran was kind enough to give his Atomic films a dynamic 5.1 DD soundtrack, and Atomic Café sounds more like a radio broadcast than a DVD. Plus, there are zero extras to speak of. Normally, extras do not make a DVD (how many times are you going to watch them, anyway?) but this is one of those times when an interview, or a commentary track, or even a movie trailer, would have been nice.

All in all: worth the price, especially to an Atomic collector. This film belongs on the shelf of any serious nuke-film aficionado, and this DVD will probably be the best version we’re going to see.

We sat watching the documentary on Turner Classic Movies: “The Dream’s On Me.” The “dreamer” was Johnny Mercer, the songwriter whose name has cropped up time and time again in my life whenever I found a song I really loved.

We sat there, stunned to realize how much a part of our lives this Southern gentleman had been. “Did he write THAT!” “My gosh! Was THAT his too?” “Wow! I learned ‘Jeepers creepers’ in the fourth grade!”

“Lazybones” and “Day In and Day Out,” “I’m An Old Cowhand from the Rio Grande” and “That Old Black Magic”–all by the same writer? “Come Rain or Come Shine” and “Autumn Leaves”?

Buy,Download, Or Stream Johnny Mercer: The Dream’s on Me! Click Here

The documentary features great clips by the best singers of the 20th century, vocalizing or playing with Mercer or while he listens: Bing Crosby, the Mills Brothers, Andy Williams, Ella Fitzgerald, Lena Horne, Fred Astaire, Judy Garland (found out something about her we didn’t know!), Tony Bennett, Nat “King” Cole–on and on.

The documentary follows Mercer’s career into the Seventies, when music trends changed and his kind of ballad passed from popularity, and when I no longer learned the words of dozens of songs. More than any other lyricist in the world, Johnny Mercer was the man who gave my generation its love songs. What a debt we owe him! His tombstone uses yet another of his unforgettable phrases: “And the Angels Sing.” Indeed they did.

Clint Eastwood gives us a loving and carefully produced look at one the true musical geniuses of the 20th Century. This is as much a celebration of Johnny Mercer’s life and music as it is a biography. It plays out like a catalogue of all the great songs, performers and writers that we grew up with. Mr Mercer seems to have had some involvement in virtually every facet of “The Great American Songbook” and he excelled in all of them. Most of all this is an enormously enjoyable and entertaining 2 hours that I could watch over and over again. That’s what makes this DVD worth buying. You’ll want to take it off the shelf and play it regularly.

“The Dirty Dozen”, Robert Aldrich’s 1967 adventure classic, would redefine a whole genre of films, as public attitudes towards warfare and heroism changed, due to Vietnam. With ‘heroes’ who were certainly not noble, a mission that would require a level of cruelty film audiences had never before seen from American fighting men, and graphic language and bloodshed, the impact of the the film was both immediate (despite huge ‘box office’, many critics panned the film as ‘disturbing’ and glorifying violence), and continuing (influencing films as diverse as “Patton” and “Saving Private Ryan”). It can be viewed at many levels, as a crackling good adventure yarn, an ‘anti-establishment’ and anti-war statement, the ultimate ‘buddy’ film…few films have generated as much controversy, or stood the passage of time, better!

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Dirty Dozen! Click Here

Based on E.M. Nathanson’s novel (of rumored ‘Death Row’ convicts offered a pardon or reduction of sentence for volunteering for a suicide mission), with a large dash of the Pathfinders’ legendary “Filthy Thirteen” of WWII tossed in, the property was purchased as a potential starring vehicle for John Wayne. The Duke passed on the project, however (choosing to make “The Green Berets”, instead). Director Aldrich never envisioned Wayne in the lead, preferring WWII Marine vet Lee Marvin in the complex role of maverick Maj. John Reisman, and the actor, fresh from winning an Oscar for “Cat Ballou”, was dead-on perfect in the part. Veteran stars Ernest Borgnine, Robert Ryan, Ralph Meeker, Robert Webber, George Kennedy, and Richard Jaeckel were cast as Marvin’s military allies and adversaries.

For the “Front Six” of the Dozen, sullen Charles Bronson (another WWII vet), John Cassavetes (who would garner an Oscar nomination), Telly Savalas (in the most ‘whacked-out’ role in his career), Clint Walker (of “Cheyenne” TV fame), football legend Jim Brown (in only his second film), and popular singer Trini Lopez (in his film debut) would dominate the screen time, with a “Back Six” of character actors in much smaller roles, simply filling out the rest of the twelve parts. But a movie ‘miracle’ occurred; when Walker objected to a scene where, as a bogus ‘General’, he would idiotically review an Airborne unit (feeling it demeaned Native Americans, who his character portrayed), Aldrich passed the scene to “Back Six” actor Donald Sutherland…and the scene would spectacularly launch his career, leading to his starring role in “M.A.S.H.”

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Dirty Dozen! Click Here

Aldrich’s meticulous shooting style, and the often rainy British weather (where the film was shot), more than doubled the shooting schedule, and after seven months on location, Trini Lopez (on the advice of friend Frank Sinatra), informed Aldrich and the producers that he was missing singing dates, and would need a pay hike to continue. To Lopez’ surprise, Aldrich ‘dropped’ him, having him die in the climactic parachute drop!

The director was warned that if he didn’t eliminate the film’s most controversial scene (pouring gasoline and dropping grenades on the women guests, as well as the Nazi officers seeking refuge in the bomb shelters), he would lose any chance of a ‘Best Director’ Oscar. After soul-searching, he left the scene in (”War is Hell, and HAS to be portrayed that way”), and while he sacrificed the prize, Robert Aldrich gave the film a brutal honesty that subsequent wars would sadly verify.

With loads of Disc Two Special Features that open up the film and gives an insight into why it has become a ‘classic’ (including the first “Dirty Dozen” TV ’sequel’, a Lee Marvin Marine ‘Leadership’ training film, and an astonishing documentary on the “Filthy Thirteen”), it is absolutely an essential for any ‘War Film’ library.

“The Dirty Dozen” survived contemporary criticism, and has proven to be one of the most enduring war films of all time, as fresh today as when it debuted in 1967.

Wow…this HD presentation captures everything, including (much maligned) film grain. It is most likely a better presentation than this film had when originally released to theaters. Visuals are wonderfully clear, the print is exceptionally clean and the sound, for a movie almost 40 years old, is top shelf. This is definitely the version to own!!

Don’t be mislead by superficial reviews of a supposedly superficial movie. This is a movie for everyone who ever went someplace else to find himself. A group of teen-aged girls go on a road trip to Ft. Lauderdale to spend Spring Break. On the way, they join some guys who are doing the same thing. As each of them finds peace with his or her own personal dilemma, they emerge as adults ready to face adult obligations. They will have problems, even big ones, but you can see that because they know more about themselves and each other, they will be able to face their futures with wisdom and courage. Everyone, and I mean, everyone in the cast performs beautifully. The film is funny, moving, insightful, and entertaining and I haven’t changed my opinion since I first saw it when I was a lost teen. Maybe I’m getting more out of it than the author intended, but this film will make you care about the characters and feel good about the future, your own and everyone else’s.

The strangest part of this film was the obvious decision that Connie Francis was not beautiful enough to play a romantic dramatic lead. So they cast her as sort of a Nancy Walker type comedienne, supposedly not attractive enough to be taken seriously but just perfect for comic relief. But watching the film that makes no sense. First, Francis steals every scene she’s in. Second, she is absolutely darling. Third, as Paula Prentiss herself has said, it’s hard to swallow Connie as someone who couldn’t get a date, or a handsome date, since what guy could resist such a cute, right-there, sparkling, personable girl. This odd casting aside, the film has stood the test of time, is still fresh, fun, beguiling, tuneful and without one wasted moment. All the leading ladies are wonderful and went onto interesting careers (one as a nun). The leading guys did all right too. This made a ton of moolah for a very pleased M-G-M Pictures, found a big college audience, and is still refreshing entertainment.

This DVD was a real tearjerker and really pulled on some heartstrings. I absolutely loved it, from start to finish. Sonic’s last line was especially memorable: “Syanora, Shadow the Hedgehog.”

Sonic X is the newest animated series of our favorite blue anthropomorphic hedgehog, and the first one from Japan (If you don’t count the movie) That’s right! An anime! If anyone cares, it’s dubbed by 4Kids, but they actually did a pretty good job, unlike what happened to One Piece.

Sonic X’s story is a bit different; In the first episode Sonic and the gang are on their world (Unnamed, but I call it Mobius like in the comics), and trying to rescue Cream the Rabbit from Eggman, who has also stolen a Chaos Emerald. When Sonic tricks Eggman’s robots into firing at the power control at Eggman’s base, the Emerald causes Chaos Control which sends the crew to a parallel universe: Earth! Sonic meets up with local kid Chris Thorndyke and must lay low while trying to find his friends! However, after saving the day from Eggman multiple times, it becomes quite obvious to the people of Station Square that these human-like animals are around, and they welcome the heroes with open arms.

Volume 8, Project: Shadow, is Sonic X’s adaptation of Sonic Adventure 2 (And the Gamecube remake: Sonic Adventure 2 Battle). It contains Episodes 33 to 38, the entire Shadow Arc.

After the defeat of Perfect Chaos, Eggman hacks into GUN’s computers, and finds the diary of his grandfather, Gerald Robotnik. (Revelaing that Eggman is from Earth and not Sonic’s World) Afterwards, he breaks into the base at Prison Island and releases his grandfather’s greatest weapon, Project: Shadow! However, it turns out that Shadow is not a weapon, but an artificial hedgehog with the ability to use Chaos Control! After teaming up, Shadow steals the green Chaos Emerald from Capital City, and the media believe it was Sonic. (How they could msitake the two in broad aylight, I don’t know. If it was night, I’d forgive them, but it wasn’t) GUN captures our favorite hero, but he breaks out and escapes through Capital City, where he meets Shadow. Interrupted by GUN and once again arrsted, Sonic is taken to Prison Island. At this point in time, Eggman attempts to steal the Master Emerald once again, but Knuckles shatters it, preventing him from doing so. It’s thwe Chaos Arc all over again as Knuckles hunts the pieces down!

Later, Shadow has led Eggman to the Space Colony ARK, and begins to explain the weapon pwoered by Chaos Emeralds: The Eclipse Cannon. With all the Emeralds, it could wipe out a whole planet! Rouge the Bat overhears and teams up with the two to get the two Emeralds on Prison Island. Unfortunately, Amy and Tails are also on the island, brekaing SOnic out. In a final race/fight Sonic and Shadow settle their differences upon realising the ARK is falling to earth! It’s a race against time, they have exactly 24 minutes to save humanity! This DVD presents real life situations. A lot of us don’t stop and think of the many people that are killed by driking and driving. If you have children, I recommend you show this DVD to them and let them see that a simple mistake can have big consequences.

DUI-Dead in 5 Seconds is a very efficient way of educating teens in the real risks of driving under the influence. Our HS SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) used it at an assembly during our “Every 15 Minutes” event and students watched it intently. We followed it with the testimony of a well-loved substitute teacher whose son was killed by a drunk driver. I wouldn’t say the video stands alone without some follow-up “processing” discussion, but no one piece on this issue ever could. It’s also affordable when compared to the MADD videos that cost $200 and are formatted only for an extra-wide screen display.

How do I describe THE TALE OF DESPEREAUX? On the one hand, it’s got top-notch animation, wonderful voice acting, and interesting characters. On the other hand, it has a few too many characters, grown-up themes, and requires the viewer’s rapt attention. On the gripping hand, it’s just not for little ones. To be clear, it’s fine for young ones to watch, it just seems that they are not the film’s intended audience. This is odd since it LOOKS like it’s a kid’s show. It was advertised as a kid’s show. But my 4-year-old only watched when Despereaux himself was on the screen, and my 11-year-old spent most of the movie telling me how different it was from the book. My husband and I liked it, but we all agreed it was simply “OK.”

THE TALE OF DESPEREAUX is actually a couple of tales, starting with the story of a sea-faring rat named Roscuro who loves soup. Through a horrible twist of fate, Roscuro’s presence results in the queen’s death (death by soup, believe it or not) and the banning of soup and rats from the kingdom. I had to wonder why no one had thought to banish the rats before but eh. Roscuro ends up in the dungeon where only the rats hang out. The second story is about Despereaux the mouse. We decided that Despereaux must be Flemish for “Dumbo” since that’s pretty much who this mouse looks like. He can even fly with his giant ears. Despereaux is literally fearless and as such is banished from mousedom for fear of the other meeses learning his bad traits. Guess where he’s banished to. That’s right, the rat dungeon. Another story is about a peasant girl who dreams of being a princess. Apparently, this was toned way down from the novel, in that the girl’s owner only sneers at her and doesn’t beat her in the movie. We see how she is sold to the king’s cook along with a herd of pigs. She eventually teaches us a lesson about jealousy. Then there’s the king’s story. He’s so sad at the loss of the queen that he bans soup and rats (as we’ve covered) and sits in his room all day plucking a mandolin. His sadness manifests itself as gray clouds and no rain - everything dies. Then there’s the princess who wishes she could fix everything, the jailer who wishes he could undo a tragic mistake, a cook who wishes he could once more make soups, an evil rat who doesn’t seem terribly evil, and, and, and… As I said, there’s a whole lot going on.

The short answer is that THE TALE OF DESPEREAUX itself is not offensive, but there are better options in this genre. Take a look at Dragon Hunters, for instance. It deals with the same themes as Despereaux (honor, courage, valor) but my family liked it a lot more.

*Spoiler Alert. A request was made to add this for people who don’t like to see storyline*

My daughter wanted to see this film. Probably because the ads showed a cute mouse. We had never heard of this book so I can’t judge the story.

The qualities of the stories are simple. Mistakes, redemption, pure of heart, honor, etc.

The movie opens with a ship heading to a city. On it is Roscuro the rat. Wearing cloths and an ear ring he looks forward for the famous Soup of the day of the kingdom of Dor. Wandering through the city he accidentally finds himself in the royal hall as the royal family are first to try the soup. Too entranced with the smell; Roscuro falls into the Queens soup and she is shocked to see a Rat, suffers a heart attack and dies. The guards chase him and he eventally falls into a drainage where he lands in Ratworld. There he is discovered by Botticelli who befriends him and decides to teach him the proper ways of being a Rat.

The grieving king then declares no more soup and rats are outlawed and any who harbor them will be punished.

Despereaux is born in mouseworld. He is not a typical mouse. Smaller then normal and he has over-sized ears. What’s worst is that he doesn’t cower, run, and he likes to take the cheese from mouse traps. His parents are called into school and told he is about to fail since he does not cower from knives and he draws pictures of cats. Even names one fluffy. The school master suggests that Despereaux follow his brother who graduated and was a proper mouse and could teach by example.

They head off to the library where Despereaux is supposed to eat books but instead he starts reading them and learns about knights, honor and questing to save the fair princess. This eventually takes him to the Princess Peas room where he befriends her as she is curious by his gentlemanly ways.

Eventually, Desperaux is found out and he is punished as he has gone too far by talking to a human.

He is sent to Ratword where no mouse ever returns. The rats find him and toss him into a Colosseum where he is to be sacrificed to a cat.

Roscuro notices him and sees that he is different. He decides to save him by declaring he wants to eat him. Botticelli, leader of the rats, agrees as he had been unhappy with Roscuro since he was refusing to eat flesh.

In Roscuro’s room, Despereaux tells Roscuro about knights, chivalry and his quest to save the princess. Roscuro recognizes the princess is the very girl whose mother he caused to die and decides to help as he may get a chance of redemption by telling her he is sorry.

I could go on but I don’t want to completely spoil the film. Overall I liked the film as the hero really doesn’t solve all problems. It’s more cause and effect that guides the story. The actions of one affect another. Happiness is lost and as the narrator says a hero appears when most needed. Despereaux is the hero and he actions effects others and causes actions which cause the return of happiness.

The cast is excellent. Sigourney Weaver does a great job as the narrator. Matthew Broderick as Despereaux and Dustin Hoffman as Roscuro. Emma Watson as the princess(though I must admit I thought was Emily Watson). Tracey Ullman as Miggery Sow. Kevin Kline as Andre the soup master. Ciaran Hinds as Botticelli(though I must admit I thought Peter O’Toole would have been better).

Visually the film is beautiful and the music adds to experience in the right ways.

Violence wise it’s pretty safe. There is fighting but you don’t see things like stabbing, etc. It can be intense especially with the Rat chases and the rat gladiatorial scenes but it’s not too bad. My girl is sensitive but she only wanted a little comfort but she still kept her eyes on the screen.

My daugher wants to see it again as it’s a great film in her opinion and I think it’s was worth the theater price. My daughter has already declared we have to obtain the film when it goes to DVD.
